You're right, it can be complicated. A standard full fare Open ticket sometimes allows "break of journey" en-route. This will let you get off at an intermediate station and then rejoin a later train. But this provision is not universal so check with the company before you try it. Most of the "savers" including the advance purchase savers will not allow break of journey. You may be allowed off at an intermediate station but they won't let you back on a later train. It gets even more complex with "super savers" (or whatever a particular train company calls their equivalent ticket). With these tickets if you get off the train before the destination shown on the ticket you will not be allowed off of the station. The barriers/ticket inspector will prevent you leaving. They can do this under railway bye-laws (terms and conditions of travel) so if you make a fuss they'll call the police. You will have to pay the FULL non-discounted fare between your origin and the place you got off the train. You do not get any credit or refund for the money paid for the super saver ticket. This could cost £hundreds more than the fare you paid in the first place.

www.irtc.co.in allows you to book the tickets online. When you click on the link "Plan my Travel" it allows you to select destinations. There you can type just the starting letters of the station and search for the full name.
When you have chosen your preferences you will get all the trains between the selected destinations. Click the radio button of the desired train and click on the button for show availability.
You can also print an E-ticket if the facility is available for that train and get an immediate seat confirmation.
Regards
