The South has the most people living in poverty, too, which is usually the root cause of all the other problems. In many ways, the South never recovered from losing the Civil War. Their infrastructure, industry, and government was either destroyed or taken over and raped for profits by the North. While the Industrial Revolution advanced in the North (primarily off of tarriffs on tobacco and cotton), the South was left to languish for decades while their revenues were spent elsewhere.

Then look at today. The two industries that have been hit hardest by globalizaton are agriculture and textiles, both Southern mainstays since the 1950s. Those parts of the South that were able to convert to a high-tech or finance economy are doing well. The rest is still living in Reconstruction.

I find that the southern culture is hell bent on living the way that conservative policies say they should with all too obvious results. They will not tax the rich even though those states have a large population of such people. The result being the southern govt's are hard up for cash in there various services. They also let religion interfere with there education systems curriculum and so abstinence is taught instead of safe sex. Science is dumbed down when in conflict with religious teachings. They won't tax businesses and thus starve all the good social programs that could make a difference to these states. So when I see a state crowing about it's low tax rate it's a sure bet it's a socially and educationally retarded state. Thankfully i live in new england high taxes but effective govt.

The "south" has remained, since pre-civil war time, primarialy an agriculural based economy. The values (morals) required to remain succesful, in an agriculural economy, differ greatly from those required in other economic regions. I would consider it fruitless to make such value (moral) comparisons between regions. You may also find the numbers reported in your research are askew. I would refer you to the federal governments reporting of unemployed workers and how the workers are counted, beginning with 1945 thru 1969. Then compare that to those between 1970 and 1980. I find that it is usually the motives of the people doimng the reporting that influence the conclusions of such reports.

I find that accurate cionclusions, based on the types information you use, can only be drawn when you analize the raw data yourself and do not rely on the conclusions of others ,who may have motives differing from your own.
In my own experience, I find the "values" of the people I've met in the "south" to be of a deeper sense of humanity than I've experienced anymhere else. I would suggest that you knock on some doors, meet and talk to some people. That is where you will find the data you need.

Well just because it has the highest rate of problems according to your statstics doesn't mean it is the most immoral area in the country. These same problems you mention affect many parts of the nation anyway, and you have to go much DEEPER than statistics to prove that an area is 'the most immoral area in the country'. Statstics are not a comprehensive measure of morals. Also, low school scores does not mean that an area is immoral. I'm not from the south by the way; I just don't think one can prove that a region is the 'most immoral' part of the country.

Do you mean to tell me YOU don't consider Florida to be among the southern states??? That's is the only response your half-wit question deserves.

I would like to add a little something now. I am from south Alabama and until you know for fact of what you speak, keep your mouth closed. For those who still seem to think that we all have chickens running loose in our front yards and live in the "country" and have 2 or 3 old cars up on blocks, and an old porcelain commode in the yard for a planter......get over it. Just because the media finds that most ignorant, toothless hick with her hair up in rollers talking about the "twister sounding like a train when it come through" don't feed into it. It's all a bunch of crap. Get down here and see for yourself.

I noticed that you included WV - which is only "southern" if you mean impoverished - because it lies entirely north of Ohio's southern border.

I also noticed that you didn't include Florida - and on what basis are you doing that?

If you're claiming the "south" as in the "old Confederacy," then you have to drop Kentucky, because we never were in rebellion.

Cherry picking is a very dishonest way of framing your statistical questions.

It is the least cared for portion of the country, and Katrina is proof of that. It's not that the area is immoral, the way the people are treated, and the lack of opportunities given is immoral, and we have our government to thank for that.
