I'm sorry to bring this off topic, but before answering the question at hand, I should explain why the middle east seems backwards to us.
Hundreds of years ago, during the 12th century, the crusaders swept into the Middle East. These were Christians, but they showed no regard for human life, liberty, estate, or pursuit of happiness. The reasons for this, were connected to the problems of western Europe at the time. Poverty, Fanatic religion, oppression of women, contempt for individuality; do these problems sound familiar? They are the problems in the middle east today. Back then, compared with the rest of the world the middle east was the most progressive place on Earth. They pursued the interests of philosophy, arts, linguistics, and most importantly economics. This was a time when Europe was ruled by feudalism. A system in which the lord taxes the peasants of all their goods and gives next to nothing but the temporary use of bad farmland. In the middle east, however, there was a free market tax and trade system somewhat similar to modern capitalism. (Not a very good system, but certainly, better than feudalism.) How did the middle east get so advanced? They inherited the strength of Rome. In Roman times, western Europe was dominant, but when Rome fell, many of their technological achievements were examined and reproduced, and modified for the better in the middle east. Western Europe was thrown in to the dark ages, which was the source of the problems I mentioned earlier. When the time of the crusades came around, Europe's backward, violent, religiosity unified them under the banner of Jesus Christ, a liberal, progressive, who would be shocked and disgusted by what he saw. They marched south to invade the adherents of another faith. Muslims ruled by Saladin, a king famous for his magnanimity. They attacked and seized Jerusalem, killing all Muslims and Jews livering inside. Yes, under Saladin, Jews and Muslims lived in harmony. The Christians held Jerusalem for five years before losing it back to Saladin. When he invaded the city, he told his men that any harm done to unarmed civilians was to be done on the soldier who inflicted it, tenfold. After witnessing his kindness, Jews, Muslims, and Christians together cheered his name.
Western Europe was dissatisfied, and took Jerusalem back, and continued war in the middle east. Continued raping, and pillaging until the wealth was drained. The Europeans stole back the advancements of Rome, and set the progressive middle east, back hundreds of years.
After accumulating such wealth and information, the way was paved for the Renaissance, and enlightenment.
This process often takes hundreds of years, but it usually does end up happening: The wealth of many people in one region=leisure time=thought=association=the development of progressive ideas=the enactment of those progressive ideas.
This is why the west seems so much more liberal, progressive and egalitarian than the middle east. Any area that gains massive wealth and holds it for a long time, will become progressive.
