Are you breast or formula feeding?
You should ask your pediatrician, but I don't believe a 6 week old needs it. If you are breast feeding the child is getting all s/he needs. If you are formula feeding, you are already mixing with water.
If you are breastfeeding then the baby eats when hungry and stops when full. Breastfed babies don't over eat! It's harder with formula when you aren't sure if you're giving too much or too little.
I would urge you to clarify with your Doc.
Congratulation!!

Babies get all their nutrition from either formula or breastmilk. If you take up room in their tiny tummies with extra water, that will deprive them of space that could have been filled with nutrients, instead of empty calories.
I haven't given either one of my children water until they reached at least 4 months. When you have a fat, happy baby and know they won't suffer from substituting a few calories with water, then it's ok to start on water.
Actually, if the baby is on formula, you are giving them water in that.

My daughter is also 6 weeks old, I would say yes but only after giving meds. My daughter has thrush, so I have to put this really nasty medicine in her mouth. babies like to spit things out, so I give her about 1/2 an ounce to rinse.
Should never be used in place of food.

If you are breastfeeding it's not necessay. The baby gets everything he needs from breastmilk. If you are formula feeding, then you might give an ounce or two, if your pediatrician approves. I'd recommend sterlized or bottled water over tap, however.

This used to be a common practice, especially at birth, but now we know that it isn't necessary. Exclusive breastfeeding provides your baby with the nutrition it needs through six months.

No, about 15 years ago it was very normal, however all docs agree that it now takes away from a newborns tummy room & reduces ther much need appitite, wait till baby is at least 3months.

ask the pediatrician to be sure but probably OK to give baby a little by bottle. The baby's formula has water in it, it it's a bottle fed baby. Don't substitute formula feedings with water.

I know doctors now day's say don't give your babies water but I gave my son water from the first. He's 32yrs. old healthy, risking his life in Iraq and Afghanistan in different tours. The only thing is the water I gave him I bought and used only Distilled. The purest water.

This is what I think: Every living thing on this planet needs water- even babies. But check with a doctor. I wouldn't want to give wrong information on something this important.
