I just moved into an older house in Oakland, CA and I don't want to ask the manager to show me how to turn on the heat because he gives me the creeps. Anyhow, the heater is this 1 or 2 foot tall brown box that is connected to the kitchen with a silver tube. It has a vent in the front and on the top. It looks pretty old school. Any ideas? If you even know the name of what the heater is called that would help me look up how to use it.

One of the covers, usually the bottom one, comes off. There you will find a valve with the inscription "pilot, on" and ever some degree numbers. Turn the knob to "pilot," push the button and hold it down while applying a lit match to the small tube atop the knob. Once it lights hold the button down for about a minute and then turn it to the "on" position. Walla!
Enjoy.
Mr. M on "turn on heat."

It is a gas heater, I had one when I first bought my house 31 years ago. They are really not safe, but those small heater are not either. For sleeping why don't you try a heating blanket.
I did use the gas heater for a while but sometimes the heat gets so hot that the heater itself turns red, like it is on fire, you don't want to know how many times I had to called the firemen because this contraction was so hot and making weird noises. I finally took it out.
