There are probably several things you can do to improve your health, but finding a sleeping pattern that is right for you is probably one of the most beneficial. Experts say that 8 hours of uninterrupted sleep every night is best, but that may not be true for everyone. For example, I have found that 8 hours of sleep is actually too much sleep for me, as it makes me feel very tired. However, my brother needs at least 9 consecutive hours to be at his best. The point is individual people have individual needs, especially when it comes to health issues as important as sleeping patterns. If you do not feel that you are at your best, you probably have a pattern of sleep that needs to be changed, if possible. Sleeping on a split-shift, like you do, may be the best for some people, but it's usually not the best idea. Your body makes repairs to itself while you sleep, and if those repairs are interrupted, it's not like they can just pick up from where they left off when you sleep the extra 2 hours. A nap is not always a bad idea, however, but it should come later in the day and not exceed thirty minutes to an hour.

Hmmm.....I don't believe you can make up for lost sleep.
It's not good actually. Have you ever noticed that when you get the kids up for school you're feeling pretty good. Maybe a little groggy still, but you're doing it. Taking care of business and whatnot...Then you go back to sleep. Do you not feel a little more tired when you wake up the second time? I've always found this to be true for me, and no joke I've talked to my daughters and friends and they feel the same way. It's like "I should of stayed up the first time." I know broken sleep is not good, and what you're doing is a form of it. Depending on your age you might not need the 8 hours. It's like you've set this goal that may not be even necessary. Ya know?
I try and sleep any where from 6 and a half to 7 hours a night. On Sunday, a little more for sure.
Can you go to bed a little earlier? If you've got to have the 8 hours it might be a good idea. If not, just try dealing with the six hours sleep. Stay up instead of going back to bed and you'll probably want to go to bed earlier anyway.........I don't know.....it all depends on you....you're age....and your schedule.
I think the 8 hours is definitely over rated though, especially nowadays with working, schooling, and all the extra activities going on in peoples lives...
Good luck.....oh, and Sweet Dreams..! ! !

Sounds like you have found a pattern that works for you. Yes, you can make up for lost sleep by napping. I would love to get nine hours in a row but I have a 11 week old son so that is not an option! We nap together throughout the day and night and when my husband is home (he's a long-haul truck driver) he gives me the greatest gift of all - a full nights sleep!
Some people need nine hours, some only three or four. Check out Mayoclinic.com's sleep centre if you're curious.

Keep in mind, I am not an MD. It is my understanding that while 8 hours is average, everyone's sleep needs differ. Some people need 10 hours, some only 6. I've heard of a woman who only needs 4 hours a night (lucky!!!).
I believe to get the rest you need one needs to achieve a certain degree of REM sleep. You will likely be able to get this with a 6 hour stretch - I think it takes about an hour to reach this state.
Also, an interesting note: wolves are strong and vital animals and they don't sleep a full night, rather they take naps constantly throughout the 24 day cycle.

Ask your Dr. Not all people need 7. Some need 7-8, some need 6. Why don't you sleep till 12:30A?
I sleep, 8, sometimes 5, sometimes 4, whatever, I do what I gotta do to get my kid off to school, some days my aunt does it, some days I do, some days I have school myself. I can't really answer, because right now I'm in a depression, and i can sleep 12 plus hours, and feel tired.

Depends on how much stress you gotta deal with....if you get 6 hours of full sleep on average, and you dont have much stress to deal with except kids (if they're bad), then you're fine....mine fluctuates, if my schedule's busy i'll get 3-4 hrs of sleep, sometimes less, if things go smoothly I can throw in a good 8 hrs. Normally on my days off i'll make up for loss time and sleep an atrocious amount. But again i think it depends on the tasks you have everyday, and what you can handle.

in my years of experience, its not how much u sleep, but how much deep sleep u have. u can have 6 hours of deep sleep and feel more rested than if u have 12 hours of tossing and turning. so tell me: what kind of sleep is it? i think thats all that matters really.

As long as you feel rested. If you use heavy equipment and haven't run over anyone or cut off a couple fingers with power tools, you're doing all right.
