This is from what little history I learnt in school. Ok... the Taj Mahal is situated in Agra, India. It was built in the 1600s by the Mogul Emperor, Shah Jahan as a tribute to his late wife, Mumtaz Mahal.

The Taj Mahal is made of pure white marble and it is one of the Seven Wonders of the World. It took 22 years for the whole building to be constructed. Accordingly, it seems that it took artisans from all around the world to construct this piece of marvel. And it’s rumoured that all who were involved in the construction of the building had their hands chopped off so that they could not build another like it. The emperor and his wife are buried in the building.

The Taj Mahal remained beautiful throughout the centuries but in recent years, it has been turning yellow as a result of the high levels of pollution in India and is corroding due to acid rain that is produced from the rain mixing with the pollutants in the air. Restorative works took place a few years back to restore the marble to its original whiteness.

The surroundings of the Taj Mahal are very beautiful too. There is a very long water area (don’t know what it’s called but I presume it’s a fountain) where lotus flowers grow. There is also a mosque situated in a certain part of the building. In the building itself, there are many artefacts from that period in India.

The Taj is synonymous with couples and lovers in India. There is this belief that one should not turn back after viewing the building as he or she will return there again even if he/she says they will not. In addition, it’s also rumoured that once a person visits the Taj Mahal, he or she will meet his true love etc.

There are many stories that are centered on this building but the one thing it mainly involves is undying love.

I would definitely want to visit this Wonder of the World though I am not too sure about the truth in the belief of coming back again. This belief has been portrayed in Hindi movies.

Ok… this is how far my knowledge extends to the Taj Mahal.

Btw, there are some negative comments in reference to how the Taj Mahal was built. Some believe that it was a Hindu temple belonging to Lord Shiva that Shah Jahan forced the Hindus to surrender and he converted it into a temple. It is a rather interesting theory but I do not know its credibility. Since it has a beautiful history to it, I would rather stick to that theory than any other.

For those interested in knowing more about the theory that it belonged to the Hindu temple of Lord Shiva, you can look up these websites and judge for yourselves. Happy reading!

When Islamic hordes came to India, they destroyed 10,000 temples, and converted many into mosques. However, there are still traces of Hindu Gods in the buildings, while some rooms have been cemented,as in the case of the Taj Mahal, formerly a Shiva temple.Islamic hordes knew nothing about architecture.....

The Taj Mahal was built for Mumtaz Mahal, wife of the Mogul emperor of India, Shah Jahan. When she died in 1629, her husband ordered the most beautiful tomb in the world to be built for her. It took 20,000 people 20 years to complete. The emperor and his wife are buried together under the 60-m-high, white marble dome.Location is in India.
