In general, this is a good time of year to get a good airfare to Hawaii. The specials I've seen before the earthquake are cheaper than it costs the airline to get you here, and I can't imagine them dropping much lower. Also, the first humpback of this season's migration was spotted off west Maui last week, so the humpbacks will be arriving, mating, giving birth and frolicking until about March.

We can expect the waves to be kicking for another great surf season on north facing shores, while south shores can expect conditions ideal for swimming and snokeling. A few Kona storms will bring some much-needed rain to turn leeward sides of the islands green, while the sun is usually still shining somewhere in the islands.

The North Korean tests had nothing to do with last week's earthquake in Japan or yesterday's earthquakes on the Kona side of the Island of Maui. Earthquakes are fairly common there, and related to the stressors put on the island while active volcanos are growing. Yesterday's biggest quake is not the biggest quake to hit the island of Hawaii in recorded history, and it's not even the biggest to hit the Kona area in the past 40 years.

If you want some hazards to get hysterical about, you might look into the Yellowstone volcano, the historical New Madrid earthquakes and modern hazard, the Hilina slump, and a volcano in the Canary Islands that might collapse, causing a tsunami to hit the east coast of the US. But there's no connection between alleged North Korean underground nuclear tests and earthquakes in the middle of the Pacific Plate. And you might as well live your life while you can.

I guess I really can only answer, "Who knows". I tend to dismiss that kind of stuff but I am having problems dismissing this question's premise for a few reasons.

1. the nuclear test DID in fact cause earthquakes. no question about that
2. earthquakes also occur from shifting plates. it is conceivable that a shock-created quake (from the test) caused neighboring plates to be a bit unsettled. in fact, think about what an aftershock actually is!
3. nuclear explosions with a detonation at or below ground have their shock waves and radiation amplified by the ground and through the ground. sound waves (a type of shock wave), once leaving water from land can travel faster and further. think of the sounds of whales being heard in the oceans 1/2 around the world. think of tsunamis the reach of tsunamis.

So, I cannot give you an answer one way or the other. I can only give you the reasons why it is not so easy to dismiss.

Err i dont think its interconnected. Quakes are produce when seismic waves in the ground causes tectonic plates to react differently.
Has nothing to do with nuclear testing.
Hawaii vacations arent too expensive in the first place. Take it easy

One could think that but it is debateable. The world is so unstable at any given time. I think it's just a point of the fact that we have neglected mother nature and she is showing her fury.
