America offers no protection to it's citizens from the Plutocratic Oligarchy of transnational corporations, which have infiltrated democracy, through campaign contributions and lobbyists. Since the early 1990s certain European countries have more and more closely followed in Ronald Reagan's footsteps, leading to economic anarchy, but no European countries have gotten to that level. Some countries, like Belgium and Denmark, have set up a system of near perfect harmony between liberty, equality and security, on a economic and socio-political level. Hats off to them. The fact that their are so few homeless people in those countries and so many in America is disturbing. EU: 6.5 per thousand, US 11.6 per thousand
On socio-political issues, America's record isn't nearly as ugly, but it's still not perfect. I imagine that because of the patriot act, if America was a poor, eastern European country with the same political system, it would not be granted membership into the EU.
Due to these weaknesses, we are getting behind in technology, and general human development. I can hardly see how an America has a better system.
There was a long period of time in which America had a better system of government, and it still has so much carry over from that time period that right now it is relatively equal with, or slightly behind most EU countries. Now, though, America's system has been damaged by extreme right wing capitalism and progress has been slowed to the effect that they are currently surpassing US, and soon they will be on top, while America becomes a second world country. I hope that EU nations will notice this happening and learn not to follow in America's footsteps in the past 6 years, and through out the 1980s.

Currently, the EU's governmental framework is a result of complicated treaties with exceptions, opt-out clauses, and amendments. The European Union also has the task of having to try to balance between rich nations and poor nations - the rich ones think they pay too much into the EU and the poor aren't paying enough, while the poor countries think that they need the financial assistance of the rich to get on their feet.

Think of the EU countries like states in the US. They all have their own government and their own character. The major difference is that in the United States, the states must obey the federal government. In the European Union, the countries do not really have to obey the EU government, and can do whatever they please.

The social system in the EU countries varies from nation to nation, and so cannot be judged as a whole. Europeans do not, however, have a history of accepting foreigners as citizens like the United States does. This can easily be explained: in the past, Europe was the source of migrants, not the destination. America has always had immigration, and immigration problems, while Europe has not until fairly recently.

Believe it or not, our American health system works pretty well. In the EU, each nation has a separate health system, and so judge each one separately. Unless a EU-wide health system is instituted, we can't judge them.

Generally, however, Western European schools are better than American ones. Remember, though, that Eastern Europeans schools generally are not as good as their American counterparts.

We can't tell if the EU is superior to the USA at the time. The USA is certainly a more unified and cohesive unit than the EU.

If you really want to know which system is better in the eyes of residents, ask somebody that has lived in both places what their opinion is. That is probably a more reliable way, anyways.

I was born and raised in Western Europe. Life there is not bad but the USA is way better. I help my relative out because though some of them are hard workers, they pay so much in taxes their standard of living is quite a bit beneath ours. BTW the medical over there is very good for infectious diseases but for anything else, it is more like a mediocre HMO. Been there, done that, don't wanna go back. And also my sister's 72 year old Mother-in-law is still working because the pension she gets form the government is not enough for her to live on.

It is not about superiority, its about efficiency, and the Europeans have more experience on sociology (they have been around way longer than us, the us citizens or Americans) and by all means they are not perfect, no question about it!.
and inferior to some extent on their educational system. You might think what Canadians have to do with this (well they are more European than us ,US citizens or Americans). they still bend over some lady tittled "queen" we don't! which is good! we are created equal, that is the greatest. so we are red blooded Americans , not a slight of "blue blood" in our veins. and yet , god "greed" is with us to slow down our progress .

Sadly, I don't know! I hear about the individual countries more than the EU itself. They seem to differ greatly from one another. Germany has many fine standards. I know people from there. I have even worked with people from Russia who said they didn't observe their own lives as being of poor quality when under Communist rule. I am NOT a communist! (Right wingers will run with that one, LOL!). I merely bring up that point from real people sharing, because I think we can get arrogant to assume that everybody in the world wants to live as we do.
Back to your question, I have more research to do!

We have the capability to be whatever we want. Little social engineering. Personal pride and responsibility. Most productive . . .
But, if you prefer elsewhere, be my guest.

Any attempt to analyze such things in simplistic, one-dimension terms is going to fail.

You ask what seems to be a simplistic question, when in reality the matter is rather complex.
And you believe you already know the answer to this question, undoubtedly by merely extrapolating from ambiguous numbers and haughty claims that you read in magazines.
