i've know people who have taken prilosec for years but you should be checked by a doctor periodically. OTC prilosec is half strength so you may take two tablets daily if one isn't working. long term use of PPI's may lead to a vitamin B12 deficiency; therefore, take a delayed release B12 tablet daily. one study showed no bone loss in young adults using short term PPI's. a 2008 study showed increased risk of hip fractures in elderly patients on PPI's but a 2010 canadian study showed the following: Proton-pump inhibitor use is not associated with osteoporosis or accelerated bone mineral density loss. The association between PPI use and hip fracture is probably related to factors independent of osteoporosis. avoid acidic foods, alcohol, caffeine and chocolate. don't lay down immediately after eating. eat at least 3 hrs before going to bed. elevate the head of your bed 4-6 inches.
