Absolutely! This past Friday, my nephew was at school. A boy had brought a gun to school and "held up" two children in the bathroom with the gun. My nephew was already in class with this child twice. Now with the hysteria of so many children being scared and wanting to go home.... if that were your child wouldn't you want them to be able to reach you asap?
(This happened in Temple, Georgia which is a very small town.)

Yes-only if the ringer is off during school hours. I do also believe that kids below the 9th grade should not be allowed to carry cell phones because they would have the tendancy of losing them. High schoolers and above should be allowed to carry them in case of emergencies. A lot of kidnappings would be prevented if these kids had a phone to call 911. When the kids have the phones they should be on the vibration mode in case there is an emergency at home. Also when they have these phones they need to be careful with them because they might be stolen.

I agree with most of the answers, the students should be allowed to carry cell phones, just have them on silent. My daughter does it every day so does a lot of other kids. Basically it's already being done, and accepted as long as the student keeps the phone out of sight and the ringer off.

One reason I also agree, no one mentioned, we have a lot of parents fighting over seas, if they get a chance to call and talk to their child, even if it's during school, I believe it should be allowed.

Why there is dress code in school? Its because it create a sense of discipline and equality among all the students. Allowing cell phone will create differentiation, divert students' mind from practical things. On addition the school will lack its unity.

NO NO NO,
We didn't grow up with cell phones and crime was there even then. Blimey, why do kids need cell phones, let them enjoy other things that a school has to offer.

No they shouldnt becoz they will waste time playing games in cell phone and camera phones taking snaps of each &
everything and more over school children will misuse it and they will not concentrate on studies if they keep in silent mode then once it start vibrating then their attention is diverted or they may be spending time by sending sms chat . so it is not advisable.

Yes!!! They must turn it off in class though. It is good to keep in touch with people that can help you out in an emergency. Once there was a vagrant who liked to expose himself to the girls who were waiting for the bus. As soon as someone would run to get the teacher he would leave, one girl text messaged a teacher without him knowing, teacher called campus security, and they caught him in the act. It important to have cell phone because it keeps you in touch with people who can help!

I think that they should for emergency purposes. These days, school isn't that safe of a place anymore. You hear of kids getting abducted or school shootings. I think that it would be a good idea to have a phone just in case the kids need to call their parents if something happens.

in the high school i attended, they let you as long as they were switched off. Its really annoying to hear a cell going off in the middle of class. But also, in emergencies, like if you mom or dad was in the hospital, or your gf was pregnant, then they let you keep it on and go to the hallway. I think that was a fair policy.
