Hi: my daughter had three bouts of lice, because of her habit of sharing hats, brushes and scarves while playing with her friends...by trial and error I have learnt what works and what doesn't.
First and foremost, DO NOT use any drugstore preparation like RID or NIX. There are too many health risks associated, and the scalp has a very high permeability to substances deposited on it.
Most importantly, due to the life-cycle of the lice, if you don't physically remove the eggs (nits) they don't work.
Second, go to a health store and purchase a bottle of Tea Tree essential oil and one of Oregano essential oil. Also, get some vodka. Prepare the following mixture in a glass jar with a recloseable lid (if you have a 4 oz. aromatherapy bottle with dropper even better...):
1/4 cup vodka
10 drops tea tree oil
10 drops oregano oil
In the evening, spend about one hour going throught the hair with a lice comb (Walgreens sells an electric one that makes a noise every time it kills a nit), removing all visible nits. This is the most important part of the treatment: due to the adult-egg lifecycle, any eggs left on hair strands will hatch and produce more egg-laying adults. After removing the nits, rub the vodka-essential oils mix into the scalp. Leave overnight. Shampoo in the morning and apply a rinse made with cider vinegar and about 2 ml. of vodka mix (approx half a teaspoonful).
Repeat every day for two weeks. Yes, it is labor-intensive, but this is the only method that has worked for my daughter when all else failed. Oregano Oil is one of the few substances that is capable of killing 100% of BOTH the egg and the adult, whereas adult lice cannot stand the scent of Tea Tree Oil, so it is bound to leave the head for more pleasant surroundings. So what if your child's head smell like pizza sauce for a couple of weeks? At least you will have used a safe, healthy alternative to pesticides.
One last word of advice: do wash the child's bedding and used clothing DAILY during the treatment. Instruct the child to keep jackets and outerwear away from other children's clothing (the culprit: all those jackets hanging side-by-side on the classroom rack!) and not to share headwear and brushes with ANYONE! Last but not least, a Tea Tree or Peppermint shampoo is a good preventive measure.
Good Luck!

We are in the same boat. It has been months and we've used the prescription thing as well. This is the only thing that's been working. Coat the hair with olive oil and comb, comb, comb. You have to do this at LEAST every other day. You can't treat it and then forget about it. Because the nits are so small I've learned that it takes many sessions to get them all. Once there are only a few here and there, you can take nail scissors and cut them out.. What makes it worse for us is my daughter whines and complains the whole time.

My friend got lice and she had an extremely difficult time getting rid of it because her hair is very full and tightly curled. Rid didn't do the job, so someone told her to use Petroleum Jelly (Vaseline) and cover her whole head, then comb and comb and comb the lice out. The theory is that the Vaseline stops the lice from moving, and allows the comb to get the lice out. This was finally the method that got rid of her lice completely.

Not only do you have to possibly do repeated treatments with the shampoo/comb you have to delouse your home. Wash all clothing/bedding etc in very hot water. Place all stuffed animals in airtight garbage bags for a couple of weeks, Wash your couch, carpets (anything fabric) etc. Continue to check your daughter's head and remove any nits you see. It's a nightmare to get rid of them but if you don't do all this they will continue to come back. Also lice prefer clean hair as it's easier to stick to clean hair. Wash your daughter's hair every 2-3 days instead of daily. Good luck.

Your Doctor is probably right on what to use. There is a Rx for lice. You need to make sure all her clothes and bedding are washed. You need to eliminate any place where they were. Have her school check her classmates. Lice can jump from one person to another. Make sure no one else in your family has lice Also, you have to make sure that your house is clear of lice

You have to make sure you wash all of your bed linens and anything her head touches because lice can live a while and she will keep getting it. Also treat yourself, anyone else in your household, and boil your hairbrushes. I had long hair and got it when I was about 15 and it took months to get rid of it entirely. I ended up getting my hair cut and getting a perm .. That finally killed it. My child also had it one time and we used RID and the RID spray that they make and washed everything. She never got it again.

Do the mayo or use cetaphil again then get the spray (I think it's from RID) and spray it in her hair everyday for a couple of weeks. The spray doesn't kill existing lice but repels new ones. That's good because until all the kids in her class get rid of them it'll be an un- ending cycle.

i would make sure ur cleaning EVERYTHING !!....bedding that shes layed on, clothes...hats, gloves, mittens, coats that she has worn, i would bag all her stuffed animals up tight to kill the lice. i would wash/ wipe down everything in her room and where she is normally. vacuum furniture, floors, rugs. Wash bed linens and washable clothing in hot water (140 º F for 20 minutes). Heat dry clothing or other fabric items in a clothes dryer (hot cycle - 155 º F for 20 minutes). Dry clean clothing that cannot be washed or store articles for 20 days in sealed plastic bags. i would find out if she got it from school. if so see if she can't sit next to someone else b/c chances are she got it from someone she plays with or is always around. tell her not to share...combs, brushes, towels , hats or clothing with any of her friends ! also....vinegar helps to get rid of lice on the head !

I would try the mayonasise. Then make sure after you wash her hair you get all of the nits off so that they cant hatch.. Then if she keeps getting them, I would contact the school, or daycare if applicable and warn her friends parents because she is getting them from somewhere. Put all stuffed animals and anything like that in a garbage bag. You can put pillows and pillowcases and sheets in the dryer so it kills them.
