A good judge is an individual who graduated from a good law school, a person who has a lot of time in the courtroom arguing cases for their clients, a good judge would be a person who is admired by many in the law profession, a good judge should also have a lot of experience as a judge on the bench, and a good judge should also have a perspective of the law that helps the people as a whole, rather than a perspective that helps big businesses and special interest groups. Finally, all of these qualities I mentioned were embodied in John Roberts and Samuel Alito, whom I believe were the best choices for the U.S. Supreme Court to succeed William Rhenquist and Sandra Day O'Connor.

I have a problem with the idea of municipal court judges (at least in Wisconsin) being elected without the prerequisite of some legal background. Yes many of the cases they handle are pretty simple (like dui's and speeding tickets) however some do require at least a very basic understanding and the ability to interpret constitutional rights among other potential problems.

A good Judge has no political bias and uses the facts and abides by the existing laws as layed down by the legislature and enacted by the executive branch.
Poor Judges legislate form the bench.

They should be inexpensive, and stay bought. Hate it when a judge sells out to the highest bidder, first bribe should be the one that's binding.
