Do you really think if you offered to give them lunch in exchange for them washing the windows on your house or mowing your lawn or washing your car, etc. Do you think they really would accept the offer, or are they really just looking for free cash?

I say they are just looking for the cash. They probably know that the people they are begging are not willing to have them know where they live or work. Giving cash is easier and quicker. Many of those people aren't even homeless. They do that for a job. Just look at the shoes...the shoes tell all. If they are nice looking, they are begging as a job. If they are raggedy, throw them a buck.

I think it's a little of both. Some of them are hoping for handouts for drugs (or whatever). Some of them will legitimately work for food and will be very grateful for just that. I've run into both, and I'd say it's about 1/4-1/3 looking for handouts, because they're 1) offering to work, and 2) offering to be "paid" something they probably can't exchange for drugs. At least that's my experience.

You gotta watch those folks and listen to that "inner voice". Most want a hand-out. I've seen some booze it up behind places where they have just gotten cash...they don't want you to BUY them lunch, they want the cash!

"Food" is Hobo-slang for "Crack".

How do you think they ended up that way in the first place?

"Work for food" = "Got any money for a beer?"
