Of what use is improved knowledge skills in a world plagued by increasing war, crime, and violence? If education was serving its true purpose as a medium of socialization shouldn't there be greater harmony among community members at both the micro and macro levels?

Education WOULD help mankind, if mankind were truly being educated. The problem is that most students are being taught to memorize and regurgutate. Being taught how to think is what is really missing.

It also provided every convenience you use. Including the computer you are typing on and the web that allows instant contact around the world. Not to mention, transportation and a million other things you can readily identify.

I'm just not sure your definition of purpose is necessarily accurate. I see education of a means of conveying or passing on to the next generation the knowledge possessed by the last one plus that learned by this one. Education can show the way but people have to walk the path. Maybe people are the problem, not the knowledge.

I will concede, you have some valid points about mankind, but I can't associate it with education the way you do.

I don't think I have done a very good job of addressing your cause and effect correlation. I'm sorry, I have honestly tried, I just can't seem to get it into words. The two are on different levels from my viewpoint. I just can't seem to verbalize it.

Maybe someone else will do better. I hope so. Good luck sorting it out, I know you will have me thinking about it for a while.

Increased war, Crime, Violence? The crime levels at the time you are living always seem the worst maybe, but they have been much worse, The ancient Romans celebrated violence, same as many other cultures. During the first century of the colonization of America crime was like crazy. Not exactly like in the western movies, but not far off.

increased education has helped decrease population because women are spending more time in school and less time having babies. also increased education prevents the spread of aids and std's. education isn't a medium of socialization....war is caused by differing opinions and opposing viewpoints, not lack of education.

Like anything else education is a tool for us to use . Wheather a tool for good bad or indifferent is up to the individual who weilds that tool . You cant blame the hammer if its used to create something abhorant . Any more than you can praise it for driving the the nails that build a school or church.
