I am getting ready to start seeing a counselor for situational depression. I have never been to a counselor before and I was just wondering if anyone could tell me what to expect.

I'm a counselor...first we do an assessment (intake)...ask family background to try and get a full picture of what may be going on...some counselors are like Sigmund Freud and others are more hippier like me!....just be yourself and tell the truth about things..if you don't you only cheat yourself and the Counselor will not be on the right path.....relax.....think of it like you are the boss hiring them!..and remember if you don't feel right with the counselor try another...it's like a diet..some work well some don't....don't be afraid to speak up and tell them when they are or aren't on the right track....many people have situational depression...studies have stated that if you have a "blue"light in a room in your house it helps.....most situational depression is due to the changes in the seasons....and cycle depression is due to a certain event triggering it....the counselor should also make sure you've had a medical evaluation to rule out things like thyroid problems that can also trigger depression...good luck....don't make this hard on yourself because it shouldn't be

You'll probably fill out some paperwork and have an initial interview with the counselor. On your first visit, you'll be asked logistical questions (age, address, phone, etc), questions regarding why you've chosen counseling, questions about your current life setting, family history and personal history. The counselor will tell you a plan for treatment & what to expect from there.

Expect to do more talking than listening. Counselors want to know about you, what makes you think and act the way that you do. They will ask a variety of questions looking for physical or emotional triggers.

Be yourself and be honest and you will get the treatment that you need.

The couselor will guide you. You don't lay on a couch (unless you want to). Just be really honest about yourself. You counselor has probabably already heard way worse or weird than what you could talk about, so don't be afraid to bring up things that might be embarrassing. It can be a really great experience if you'll let it.

Expect to do the talking. His job to listen to you and help you process what you are going through. It is kind of like this analogy: Think of it as a cut that won't heal. The doctor will cut away some of the dead skin that is preventing the healing. It will hurt, but in time it will heal. Think of that, except your brain. He/She is going to try to get you talk about what is hurting you. It will be hard and you may break down, but in the end you hopefully will get some closer. Good luck

From my experience, depression can be treated with counsuling but may return afterwards. Most depressions have to be treated with medications. expect to be reffered to a psychiatrist or physician. like others said, they are there to help you, be as honest as possible. chances are there going to try and make you realize that your situation is not as bad as it may seem.

Relax, enjoy the fact that you have someone to unload on and try to work with him or her.
