So our school girls-ask-guys dance is in mid to late January, and there's this guy that I want to ask (as a friend). I'm pretty sure there's at least one other girl that would ask him, so I want to get there before she does but I don't want to ask so early that it would be lame. When would be a happy medium between the two?

Tough. Good luck. I would have said it is never too early, but once I found out it was high school all the rules went out. There is no good rule of thumb for such an age group. Be honest and sincere. Be forgiving. Be tough enough to take some pain. Don't be afraid to ask. Time frame is anybody's guess. The safest guess is sooner rather than later. It is still a guess.
