No, because if they are doing it out of spite or meanness, you would be lowering yourself to their level. Hold your head high and be the better person and do what you WOULD HAVE THEM DO TO YOU, even if they don't. That is the golden rule. Avery good rule.

Only give presents because you want to give them. Don't go out there giving present hoping to get more back. If this is a very big issue for you suggest gift givng in a different fashion. Playing secret santa with a cost limit. That way you can get past this and start enjoying Christmas.

No, I would continue to give them presents from my heart. Since you mentioned it is not money related, Giving is a sign of love and not done for gain. I am getting the feeling that this is hurting you. I think I would feel a little hurt as well, but be mature about it and don't let it get to you. You could cut down on the prices of your gifts you buy them because maybe they are trying to cut expenses as well. Just a thought. Just keep remember what Christmas really is and the gifts will seem unimportant.

Perhaps I'm autistic and missing social cues here, but I would get a family member what I thought would be a good present for them, period. It would not be related to what they got for me. Unless they explicitly told me they were hurt by how much was spent, I'd get them what I wanted to get them.
Those who know the price of everything know the value of nothing.

Yes, they're indicating to you by spending less that they want to start something different. I'm sure it would set their mind at ease if they didn't have the pressure to spend more because you didn't spend a lot either.

my husband's family has always given him less in terms of $ value then his 5 siblings but he doesn't care. in the end he still enjoys what he gets.
we set up a budget for xmas shopping every year and figure out the amount of spending for gifts on each person.

What one spends on a gift for me does not come into play when I decide whether or not to give a gift, nor does it make a difference on the dollar amount I will spend.
When I decide to give a gift, the gift is based on my relationship to that person. For example, a best friend, a close friend, a client, distant relative, etc.

It's not about that. Spend like you usually do, forget about how much they are spending. Be a joyful giver or just don't give at all.
