It depends on what you mean by "caught", and then it varies by group. If they have absolute evidence of copyright infringement, either organization will move on it within hours. But such proof is so rare as to be almost mythical. For the typical case, the MPAA or RIAA will contact you with a "cease and desist" style letter in a matter of days, a month at the latest. The FBI won't contact you at all, except when they have the kind of evidence I mentioned earlier.

get a lawyer and use as your protection that the riaa has no tangible evidence and have the lawyer combat for the riaa to offer documentation of what documents they have of you downloading. a woman did that and the riaa no longer purely dropped the case, yet whilst she countersued for criminal expenditures, they had to pony up their attorneys' expenditures for courtroom record. what they are doing is noted as via yet another call-extortion. they are occurring the muse that incredibly everyone has downloaded illegally and that each physique they could do is threaten to sue and human beings will pay to stay away from having to pay tens of millions. they'll proceed to try this see you later as human beings cave-combat them each turn you get.
