Well, If the problem is with the mouse itself, then other users already told you what u can do.

But it should be noted that, there are some other reasons too. Sometimes, replacing the mouse doesn't solves the problem. Especially with older systems with Windows 98 or less RAM etc.

In that case follow these steps:

1. Clean your Windows drive (C:) and keep it at least 250 MB Free
2. Open-up your computer case and Clean any dust around the RAM area and clean the CPU Fan.
3. Check for viruses with a good n updated Antivirus.
4. remove any themes applied, like custom cursors, icons, wallpapers, screensavers etc...
5. Remove unwanted Icons from your Desktop & System tray (Bottom-right corner near system clock). Removing these items will not remove any softwares, so don't worry.
5. If you have any Antivirus installed, then close it temporary (also close it from system tray)

And incase that doesn't help too. Then call the professionals, like me and just relax ;)

Theres two rods inside and a small wheel, make sure the wheel is clean too (might be difficult as it seems spring loaded, but rub sideways).
If everything is clean, give the ball a wipe, fingers or a cloth will do, but if you want to rinse it make sure you dry it.
If thats done and it's still the same, try cleaning the desk or mousepad you're using it on. I often find my plastic mousepad got really dirty but you couldn't see it untill you cleaned it.

If that doesn't work, it may just be the age of the mouse and things, and getting a cheap optical one might be the best course of action. I don't mean to ignore the question and just suggest buying a new one though.

You should buy an optical mouse. Since it has no moving parts, you will not have the typical frustration of a ball-mouse owner of having to clean it regularly and then keep banging it to get it to work.

i will say paper, yet with a twist. Stack some products of paper on authentic of one yet another such that that's nonetheless contained in the form of one piece of paper, basically with slightly better thickness. Then tightly tape the stack of papers to the table alongside the 4 edges of the stack. This are some the rationalization why that's good for me as a gamer who desires precision: a million) The "mousepad" isn't extreme off of the table. This helps with my purpose because the mousepad will be on a similar authentic as my elbow that's also resting on the table. 2) The "mousepad" is agency and could no longer crinkle or flow even as the mouse is moved over it. 3) Paper has a strong texture to it and there'll by no skill be a number of friction between the paper and the mousepad. disadvantage: you won't be able to flow the mousepad, that's fastened in a unmarried spot.

Try cleaning the ball itself, check the rods again, and if all else fails:http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16826193001
$8 is pretty cheap.

I would just buy a new one. We had the same problem so we bought one of those wireless ones without the ball.
