It is great fun and the winery tours can be a blast, but...
...it can be a bit overwhelming. There is a lot of traffic on narrow roads on the weekends, and in some of the popular tasting rooms the crowds are very large and occasionally pushy.
...you should make plans in advance as to how to get from place to place if you're tasting. The sips of wine can add up and DUI laws are enforced. Either have a designated driver, use a tour company which provides transportation during the day, or stay in one place for the duration (and, trivia, you can get a DUI while riding a bicycle with the same BAC standards as if you were driving a car)

Honestly, I was disappointed when I went to Napa Valley in December. It was lovely and the wines and vineyards and wineries were great and all that, but you can easily do Napa Valley in no more than one day. It's worth seeing, but don't plan an entire vacation around it. Just spend one day doing a tour and you'll be set.

For red wines you're going to be more interested in Sonoma County (right near Napa) also known as the Carneros region. In addition to the plentiful winery tours/tastings, there are plenty of spas and tasty restaurants. I would stay in the town of Sonoma or maybe even Petaluma. Sonoma has some interesting historical points of interest and the Sonoma Jack Cheese Company, in addition wineries.
