A few months ago my computer stopped working, at first I didnt care but now I want it fixed. At the time we thought it was simply my power supply, but after being given a USED power supply, my computer still wont work. It turns on, but you hear no sounds like anything is loading. (Its a desktop) I cant ask a company, because my brother built my computer, but he's not currently living anywhere near me so I cant have him fix it. My brother said since it didnt sound like it was running any processes, that my cpu was fried. So.. Im wondering whats a cpu, how much does a new one cost, and how easily can a person fix it themselves? Or would it just be cheaper/easier to buy a new comp.

A CPU, or processor is a very vital component for a computer. Some examples are Pentium 3, Athlon 64, Core Duo, Turion, etc. To get a new CPU/Processor, go to Newegg.comm or a local computer shop. To find a compatible processor, find out what socket type the motherboard is, like 775, AM2, 478, etc. POst your motherboard specs and I will help as best I can.

Since you're asking what a CPU is, I'd suggest that you just buy a new computer and make sure you buy it with plenty of support.

Computers are really cheap now a days. (no wonder no one upgrades or fixes the older ones)

Though, if you want to play around with the old computer (since you're going to get a new one anyway and what more damage could you add), I suggest that you take the CPU, memory, video card out and clean it with a cleaning solution. After that, plug it back in. It might just work.

CPU, first of all, is the chip, or the brain of the computer, otherwise known as the microprocessor. They range in cost from around $120-$300 (that is a very broad range of prices. I acctually recently built a computer and I went through a website called www.cpu.com. it is a great site and it had all of the parts that I needed to build a full computer (and they are all discount prices).

CPU is the processor, ie Pentium 4 or Athlon. The cost is entirely dependent on how good a one you want. If you are a complete novice I would not recommend installing it yourself, take it to a private computer store, NOT Geek Squad or someone like that, they overcharge.

hi.u can't say that ur CPU was fired.check for the following
1.check that is there any loose connections in power sockets, plugs & wires.
2.if they r o.k.then check the continuity of power supply to ur computer's SMPS power chords.
3.if it is o.k. then, with care that power is switched off & remember every action u r performing, remove the cabinet of SMPS & check for the fuse.it looks like a small glass pipe.if it is blown then replace it with same rating fuse.
4.above said r all relates to power supply.
