Look into schools with a degree in Music Management. It should have a good mix of business classes, music, and some law (to learn about musicians rights and copyright law). A lot of times the professors are still active in the industry or know people and can help you get started, which is the advantage of going to school for it.

It can't hurt to get experience even if you're not there yet - even if you're just helping a local band with promotions or booking. Some of the major labels offer internships as well (usually for course credit). Either way, it'll give you a good sense of whether it's something you really want to do.

1. Your duties differ depending on what level the band is at. Playing at local bars would mean that you would manage finances, book gigs, negociate pay, make sure sound and lights are provided, promote concerts etc, 2. If a band gets signed you will most likely get kicked to the curb and be forgotten about. Thats the just how the business works. 3. They have entertainment management degrees you can get but aren't required. You have to promote your self as much as you promote your band. If you do it right you could move into many areas of the business.

The first thing you need to do is to purchase "Managing Your Band -Artist Management: The Ultimate Responsibility" by Stephan Marcone.
I am a local manager for a couple of bands, and this is my bible.
