Because they are un-educated of several facts and it came with the ISP service for free. All I use (and recommend to my customers) is Yahoo e-mail. A: it is free. B: it takes up no room (except for the cookie) on my hard drive. C: the "bulk box" does a great job of separating the chad from the wheat. D: it is as secure as any and more so than most. E: great place to store stuff. F: etc. etc. etc. G: you can also access your ISP e-mail directly from your Yahoo account.

I prefer it because it allows one fewer point of interception. I also have an ISP who guarantees total disk wipes of their mail storage hard drive system every few days (and I'm not talking 'file delete', I'm talking 'multiple write/rewrite 7 times over the deleted disk sectors').

In short -- better ensured privacy.
