Take some basic precautions:
1. Make sure your operating system is updated with all security patches.
2. Use these two free tools to scan your system:
AVG antivirus
Spybot Search and Destroy
3. Be careful what Web sites you visit. Don't go hunting for Warez and code cracks because those sites are notorious for trying to install malware.
4. Be careful what you download. Download from a trusted source.

When you download a file, just right click the file and scan it for viruses BEFORE you click on it and open it or play it. Do this everytime and you'll never ever get a virus. Everytime though ;-)

well it depends on where u are downloading from, and if u dont have a upto date anti virus program insalled like AVG
since if your using p2p like limewire the chances of getting a virus are greatly increased. but using a site like eg microsoft u will never get a virus.
