Please show the steps if you can. I've been working on this problem for the longest time and the value of x that i get is always uneven.

You need to isolate x -- it's not too hard to do with a problem like this. But, what the hey, I will show you how to do it:

First multiply out the 3(x+4) and then you can just combine like terms and isolate the x:

5x + 7 - 3x + 2 = 3(x + 4) + 4

5x + 7 - 3x + 2 = 3x + 12 + 4

2x + 9 = 3x + 16

Subtract 2x from both sides:

9 = x + 16

Subtract 16 from both sides:

-7 = x

Pretty easy when you take it step by step, right?

Good luck!

5x+7-3x+2=3(x+4)+4 2x+9=3x+12+4 2x+9=3x+16 9=x+16 -7=x

Start with distributive property.
5x+7-3x+2 = 3x+12+ 4 Now combine like terms
2x +9 = 3x+16 Subtract 2x from each side
9 = x + 16 Get the x by itself by subtracting 16 from each side
-7 = x

5x + 7 - 3x + 2 = 3(x + 4) + 4
2x + 9 = 3x + 12 + 4
2x + 9 = 3x + 16
9 = x + 16
x = -7

5x+7-3x+2=3(x+4)+4

5x + 7 - 3x + 2 = 3x + 12 + 4

2x + 9 = 3x + 16

3x - 2x = 9 - 16

x = -7

(1) 5x + 7 - 3x + 2 = 3(x+4) +4
(2) (5-3)x + (7+2) = 3x + 12 +4
(3) 2x + 9 = 3x +16
(4) (2x+9) - 2x = (3x+16) - 2x
(5) 9 = x + 16
(6) x = -7

Easy algebra.

Let's walk thru this together by first arranging the left side to put the x's together, and on the right side to get x out of the quotes:

5x - 3x +2+7 = 3x + 12+4

2x +9 = 3x +16

Now get the 2x from left side to the right side, and get the 16 from right to left:

9- 16 = 3x - 2x

Then you get x = -7

Hope this helps.

5x+7-3x+2=3(x+4)+4
distribute
5x+7-3x+2=3x+12+4
add
5x-3x+9=3x+16
add
2x+9=3x+16
subtract 9 from both sides
2x=3x+7
subtract -3x from both sides
-1x=7
now multiply by -1 or flip the signs of everything
Final Answer
1x=-7
or x=-7
both are the same thing!
