Have you tried blood meal? It's already a soil enricher/fertiliser. Sprinkle it on the surface. It doesn't dissolve, will last for weeks. Animals that dig tend to avoid surfaces with blood meal.
Other gardeners say bone meal is also effective but I've only used blood meal. Sprinkle it once or twice during an entire growing season.

Once squirrels have invaded your turf it's near impossible to have them move out. Your garden is there food source and often protection. One of my friends has a fig tree and he rarely gets a fig off the tree as the squirrels literally rape the tree at just the moment the figs are ripe....

If it is bulbs you are trying to protect place rose or pyracantha cuttings on the area where they are planted, this won't keep them out but will deter them. Sometimes by offering an alternative to your plants can be an option, much like permaculture, plant deterrent or alternative target plants for the little buggers to go after. Otherwise i wouldn't worry just enjoy having them in your garden.

sweet gum balls if available
paprika or cayenne pepper....useless after a rain....and it can get fairly expensive
chicken wire mesh if apperance isn't a problem
prayer and a pellet gun?
no matter what I have tried....they have a way of getting in
