Use Firefox. It's free, small, fast and has hundreds of plug-ins. It also let's you render a page in your choice of Firefox or IE.

You can use a browser other than IE7, such as Mozilla or Netscape. You might want to try and see if IE6 can co-exist with IE7 on the same computer and just use IE6 when you need to.
