I've never had a pap smear before. I'm not sexually active at this point but I might be soon. I just wanted to find out some details about pap smears. Like do they hurt? What exactly does it involve? Anything you can mention about it.

It is uncomfortable but it shouldn't be painful. A pap smear is just a sample of your cervix tissue that is checked to make sure there are no cancerous cells.

If you are a virgin the insertion of the speculum might hurt a little. A speculum is a instrument shaped like a ducks bill that is inserted into the vagina and opened to make room for the doctor to see the cervix and obtain a gentle scraping for the pap smear. The doctor may also insert a finger into the vagina and push down on your stomach with the other hand to feel the ovaries. Sometimes they also insert a finger into your rectum to check the ligaments. All this is over really quick and gives the doctor so much information. The pap smear is put on a glass slide and sent to the lab. It's embarassing so the first time you may want to take a friend or relative after a few most women find it just a inconvience. You can expect some discomfort the first time if you are a virgin but after that its nothing. Hope this was helpfull.

o.k. prob something you should ask your ma but i know sometimes it is embarassing. So you will go into the gynecologist. they will come into the rm and ask you regular question...like if you want an hiv test or if you are sexually active. then they will leave and ask you to get undressed and put on this paper gown. They will also give you a paper sheet deal. You wait until the dr. gets in there. you lie down and put your feet into stirrups, spread open. they will look on the outside and make sure all is well. then they will take what we all call the duckbills and put them inside of you and they screw them open until they see your uterus. this doesn't hurt but is uncomfortable. they take what looks like a big q-tip and swab your uterus for cells and send it to the lab. They take them put and you are done. There will be a nurse in there too while the procedure is done. They whole thing takes less than five minutes but makes you feel kinda violated if you are a virgin. Usually when they do the pap they do a breast exam too. they just tell you to lift your arm and they feel your breast for lumps. This to me is very embarassing...i just look at the ceiling...lol... i hope i gave you some helpful info.

Pap smears are done to sexually active women/ girls for 3 consecutive years and if they are clear of any infections it will be repeated less sooner depending on the discretion of the physician. they do or may not hurt but it ain't that bad it's better to be safe than not. it practically depends women that i have talked to say that they do hurt but others say that it ain't that bad... in my experience it doesn't hurt.

the procedure involves inserting a vaginal speculum into the vagina and getting cell samples form the cervix using a wooden scraper or a small cervical brush. the sample will then be tested for any infection. if an infection is detected you will be prescribed meds to control the infection...

If you are sexually active, it is suggested that you go for annual pap smear check up. But if you are young and never had any sex yet, they have a vaccine out to give to boys and girls to prevent cancer from one of the 100 human papiloma viruses.

Cervical cancer is caused by one of these human papiloma viruses, but usually there are like 20 that are more frequent. So if you get vaccinated against these viruses, you probably won't get cervical cancer. That is all the Pap Smear is, you go to your general practitioner, once you have had sex, maybe a year after, unless, you need birth control, go before, also to get vaccinated against the human papiloma viruses before you have sex, depending on what age you are you may need your parents signature for the vaccination. But it is important to have theat vaccination before you ever have sex. The vaccine was only discovered this year, so the rest of us canot benefit from it, who are older, since it only benefits people who are young and never had sex, it prevents them from catching one of those viruses that cause cervical cancer.

So once again, back to the pap smear, go for that about once a year, once you are sexually active. What the doctor does, is that he asks you to disrobe from waist down, and gives you a gown to put on. Then when you are ready, and sitting on the examination table, he/she will ask you to lie down on the examination table, and move your lower body closer to the edge of the examination table and put your feet in those metal stirrups. I know I felt shy at first, but then it wears off. So then the doctor inserts this metal "jack" into your vagina, with some lubricant on it, so it won't hurt. I don't know the real name of it, but it keeps your vagina open for him to be able to shine a light into your vagina, way at the back of your vagina, where your cervix is, the cervix is between the uterus and the vagina, it is thin, and it opens up when you have a baby, and then it closes.
So sometimes doctors use swabs on a long straw like holder, and they take a swab around your cervix area, you cannot even feel it really. Sometimes they use a liquid solution, and then catch it back into the bottle. Anyways then once the doctor has done that, he may want to examine your abdominal area. So he may put his fingers in your vagina, wearing latex gloves, and then he may put pressure on your uterus from the top, just to see if it is healthy, etc. so then the examination is finished, and it doesn't hurt. Losing your virginity hurts more, but if your partner is gentle while he is trying to break your hymen, it may take a while but it will work, but still my first time having sex was painful because of the loss of virginity. It really hurts, but once you have recovered from that, maybe a week, use contraception and lubricants made for sex, named: KY Jelly, KY Spray, Astroglide, and Trojan lubricant, all of these are ok to your body and will not disintegrate condom, just make sure your partner holds the condom at the base, when he withdraws from your vagina, after he has an orgasm. If you use condoms never use petroleum jelly as a lubricant, as it will disintegrate the condom.
It will take a while to get the Pap Smear result. Good Luck, once you get used to things everything will be fine, especially if you have a partner who is gentle.

it looks like you pretty much know what to expect by now... but whenever i get a pap smear, i have intense cramps for the rest of the day. probably because they take the little swabber (it looks like a little broom) and scrape just inside your cervix. so have some midol on hand, and good luck!!

they aren't the most fun exams a gal can have, but they are very necessary!

when you go in to the exam room, you will put on a gown that opens in the front. the doctor will examine your breasts. the doctor will use an instrument called a speculum to to open up your vagina in order to get to your cervix. she will take a swab of the cells and will either put them on a slide or into a solution to be examined by the lab. your doctor will also feel your abdomen for any irregularities. some doctors even perform a rectal exam.

i know it sounds intimidating, but this is a vital exam for all women to have yearly. it's just a few minutes of discomfort. i would recommend going to a female gynecologist, especially for your first visit. they know what it's like to have to go through this!

good luck!
