If you don't have the proper burial you can not cross the river Styx and therefore cant get into Hades or Elysium and will be forced to wander along the river's edge for eternity.

Your shade is doomed to roam the earth seaching for a way to cross the river Styx. The only way for the to cross is if someone will give them the coins in their mouth to give Charon to pass over. Once there they are still doomed to for ever relive their death and they are constantly hungry. They only feed on blood.

Funeral Rites were essential if the soul of the dead was to be allowed into the Underworld.

If the dead did not recieve the Rites they would be doomed to wander the banks of the River Styx.

During the funeral a coin was placed in the dead persons mouth so as to pay the fare to Charon who was the ferryman of dead souls across the river Styx.
