There aren't that many openly gay actors and many are scared that once they play gay, they will get be stuck being cast as the gay character.

Rupert Everett, a gay British actor, has played gay in a movie he did with Madonna once, and in "Gods and Monsters" Ian McKellan, another gay British actor, played the director of Frankenstein, who was also gay.

Maybe because their actors there are gay actors who play straight parts too.

Thye make more money for playing gay characters. Few out actors and actresses help the cause as well.

I think is because actors have a contract signed. and whatever the company have for them they have to do it.
is like any other job, is not a matter if you gay you can't act as straight.
When you're an actor it suppose you have the experience to perform most of the acting

maybe your right if its fixing a mower id want a mower repairman not an actor pretending ,,but in a fictional character isnt acting and good acting the prerequisite yes ,so if brando wants to be a gay man fine,, he can do it,, in fact he did play a gay bounty hunter in the missouri breaks ,, so lets see ,, carson daily or maybe deniro as sal mineo . see its about skill not those folks being down on gays ,, right ,, logic and skills

Oh come on.. plenty of in-the-closet gay guys play straight leading men!! so why not the other way around, too? fair is fair!

it's a double edged sword, if your straight ,now , you can play gay and help your career, but if your gay it will typecast you as the queer who wasn't really acting. look at rupert everett, he was fantastic in my best friends wedding, then he got the next bast thing (another gay role) then...............nothing. gay icons are few and far between, other than sir ian macclellen (gandolf,magneto) i cant even think of anyone. (at that level of success)

I think that casting is a drawn out process to find who best depicts the character. I don't think they specifically choose gy or straight.
