The word verge comes from the Latin word meaning a rod. It refers to edge or line marking the end of one thing and beginning of another. There is also a secondary meaning which refers to a point at which something is gradually beginning or ending, or an event is likely to occur- on the verge of dawn, or the verge of tears.
