Watch TV with her. This is already the time when advertisers bombard consumers with TV ads. Observe her reaction towards toys or clothes.
Bring her to a mall or a department store. Observe her reaction towards toys or clothes. Kids usually say something when they see something they like. You may also observe kids her age in the toy section to see what kids her age like.
Talk to her friends but do not make it appear it is for a christmas gift.

Since christmas is far maybe you can try to make her say what she wants, but do not make it obvious. Don't just ask her what she wants. Get to a subject where she is interested in. if you dont know then you arent really that close to her. ask her if she wants to go shopping with you and your friends and maybe you might notice her wantings. Try ask her friends.
