"Gunsmoke" on tv,saturday night. No need for police presence in school. Respect for our teachers. Teens were a part of society, they did not dominate it. The doors to our homes were only locked at night. You get the picture...your thoughts, please.

Yes, I miss the old days. I'm not old enough to remember the depression or the diseases. I remember when respect had to be earned and wasn't demanded by arrogant youth as it is today. I think that the reason the "good old days" were so good, is because as youngsters, we knew that there would be repercussions from bad behavior. Now, parents are so afraid to discipline their kids that these kids are dominating society... just like you said. Positive reinforcement only works if the kids do something worthy of praise. That's pretty rare these days. Now, if kids don't like being disciplined, they cry "child abuse" or just steal a gun and start shooting people.

I notice that one answer seemed rather negative and very lengthy. One item mentioned in that negative response was antibiotics. It seemed that when we as kids ate dirt and scraped our knees in the old days, our immune systems were stronger. Now, antibiotics are not only weakening our immune systems, but causing diseases to evolve into the super epidemics that we have been experiencing lately. I remember when doctors actually did their best to heal people. House calls have become a thing of the past. Now, it seems that medicine is motivated more by money than the desire to heal.

I remember when we would watch a television show and there would only be about 5 minutes of commercials every half hour. Now there's more advertising than entertainment.

I remember sitting down to family meals twice a day... everyone at the same time. I remember "Leave it to Beaver", "Andy Griffith", "Maverick", "Have Gun Will Travel" and of course.... "Gunsmoke". You could watch TV for hours and never hear profanity. (except for that great out-take from Gunsmoke that you shared with us)

In your dreams, sugar. The Good Old Days were anything but. Ever hear of polio? Every year, parents would absolutely dread the onset of summer weather when polio season appeared to peak. Or how about smallpox? Disfiguring in the extreme of even those who had mild cases, it often killed its victims. Or how would you like to have to be quarantined? The health department would come tack a lawful order to your door and you could not leave your house - nor could anyone else in your house - or even someone who came to visit for awhile - under the threat of immediate arrest and imprisonment. There were several diseases that could lead to being quarantined.

Or how about children having to work in factories and mines, being injured, poisoned, burned, dying by the hundreds. How about not being able to find a job anywhere - it was called "the Great Depression" - and stealing a ride on a freight train to go across country because of a rumor of jobs on the other coast...they'd call you a "hobo" and the cops would catch you, beat the living s**t out of you and throw you into a labor camp for months at a time.

Get sick? Tough - no such thing as Medicare, no such thing as affordable health insurance, and if you were too disabled or old to work you're Simply Outa Luck - SOL - 'cause weren't no such thing as social security.

Sick? Better pray, kiddo -ain't got no antibiotics to cure ya with. Can't give you no shot of penicillin -ain't no such thing.

You a hungry girl? Tough - sell your body for a quarter with which to buy a loaf of bread or 15 cents for a quart of milk.

Hey kid: I'm just getting started. NO - there were no "Good Old Days"! We're just d.a.m.n.e.d lucky we lived through them rotten old days!!!!!

Oh - and "gunsmoke"??? Sugar, 'ol Marshall Dillon wouldn't have stood there in the middle of the street facing the bad guy - he'd have snuck up and shot 'im in the back!

Yes,the good old days were nice but not for everyone because of all the racism that existed. I would call those the simpler times. Times might be complex now but at least everyone has more rights. TV has a grand way of glamourizing life from back then making things like farmwork seem pleasant when I'm sure it was anything but pleasant. 100 years from now, these days will probably be called the good old days.

Sure Do!! I'm 51.. late '60s early '70s Man those were good times..Feel sorry for the kids these days. Use to be able to get on my dirt bike back then.. ride from my parents back yard.. (I'll make this short) for many ..many miles.. power lines.. railroad accesses..ect All closed .. fenced off.. no motorcycles allowed.. I could go on and on.. In fact I loved those days so much.. I have not changed a bit.. The world around us sure has.

Yes, indeed.
I'm so happy to have experienced them. Saturday night midnight special showings at our local theater, Mr. District Attorney and Amos and Andy on our battery powered radio, gasoline lamps to read by and outdoor privies to turn over as a prank on Halloween night. One pair of school shoes each year (no designer labels), walking home from school without fear of being picked up by strangers. But most of all I miss family life. Devoted parents and seven siblings all livings together in harmony under one roof.

I miss it too. Respect for elders; putting others above yourself, the golden rule, being allowed to pray or mention God in a schoolroom...the list goes on. How did we get here, I don't know, but I do wish for some of the old times now and then...

You bet I miss it. I would trade the material advantages of today in a heartbeat. Life was simple: no internet, cell phones, ipods, cable tv, or microwaves. Wait...I like all this stuff!!!

I may sound contradictory,but yes I agree w/ you.
There really aren't any such thing as 'good old days'.
While you're living them, they're the pitts.
It's only nostagila that makes you dream of them or consider them in this way.

Yes, but there were bad things, too--sexism, racism, pointless wars....
