I'm a huge HP fan, and I think novels are phenomenal. I thought the first two movies were also very well done, in that they stayed true to the books, had coherent plots, and exhibited fine acting. In the latter two movies, though, it seemed to me that there were a lot awkward moments that weren't very well acted. I can't really put a finger on anything specific, I was just wondering if anyone else had this same impression.

I also thought the 4th movie had an extremely strange plot. Of course I've read the novels many times, so I understood what was supposed to be going on. But if I hadn't read the books, I'm not sure I would have been able to identify any meaningful plot. And the ending is so abrupt, it's almost like they were trying to shove you out of the theater.

Is there anyone who saw the movie but didn't read the books that can confirm or deny these impressions?

I completely disagree. I felt that the 3rd & 4th films were the best of the series so far. I hadn't read the books, when I saw them & I understood everything just fine. Now that I have read all the books, I can understand how some people would be disappointed by the films slightly, like my friend--a HP puriist, if you will, because they did have to leave some things out & change a few things for cinematic purposes & dramatic effect, but I'm not. The quality level of acting rises with each film because they have gained more experience. The directors of the 3rd & 4th films were also brilliant, especially Alfonso Cuarón of HP 3. He brought a darker edge & delightfully twisted sense of humor to the that film. So in conclusion, I love the first two HP movies, but I found the 3rd & the 4th films to be better. I look forward to the 5th. Just my opinion, though.

Well, I have read all the books twice, but to answer your initial question - no, I liked the third and fourth movies better than the second. The first was good, establishing the characters, setting, etc. The second was too action-oriented for my taste. Flying car, Quiddich match, much more like a roller coaster ride than anything else. The third one was well-directed and visually quite remarkable. The fourth, being the first to employ a British director, had an old-school quality that I enjoyed. It's true that a lot that was in the book had to be left out because of time constraints, but this whole series is one long exercise in working within time constraints. The young actors are growing up and developing other interests. With so many special effects, post-production requires extensive work.

To the best of my knowledge, Order of the Phoenix is not done, nor Half-Blood Prince begun.

I do hope the whole series gets completed with as much of the original cast as possible.

I totally agree re the 4th movie. I've said exactly the same thing about it. They left out a lot of important information from the book and the plot barely made sense! My boyfriend hasn't read the books and I had to spend quite a bit of time trying to explain things to him such as the significance of the marauders map etc.

I can't remember if I've seen the third movie or not. I think I have and I was also disappointed in it. Maybe it's just that the actors are aging alot faster than the characters in the books do - that must account for at least some of the awkwardness.

Perhaps you are bothered by the change in directors, as Chris Columbus directed both Sorcerer's Stone and Chamber of Secrets and felt it was a high priority to stay very true to the books. The subsequent films have a different direction because Alfonso Cuaron and Mike Newell had different priorities and visions for the films. Cuaron wanted Prisoner to have a very fluid style, but in his effort to do so left out a lot of details and explanations that would have made it more enjoyable (ie. who are the Marauders). Newell wanted to give Goblet a sense of British boarding school, but many fans grumble about Snape acting out of character in hitting Ron and Harry and other changes, like the lack of Dobby and Winky and Ludo Bagman.

I know that I am not alone in being very disappointed by Michael Gambon's portrayal of Dumbledore in the Prisoner of Azkaban and Goblet of Fire. I think he is downright annoying! He has utterly lacks the subtle elegance of the late Richard Harris, who I thought was ideal for the role. He was believable as kindly and wise, yet at the same time he seemed completely capable of being immensely powerful and intimidating. Gambon, on the other hand goes from being confused to unhinged. Recasting with either Ian McKellen (ie. Gandolf, of the Lord of the Rings) or Peter O'Toole (King Priam, of Troy) would make a vast improvement to the remaining films.

I'm really looking forward to seeing Order of the Phoenix, especially the Dumbledore's Army scenes, the Twins revolt, and the Death Eaters and the Order's clash at the Ministry of Magic. I have my reservations about it already though, as it has been confirmed that Dobby will be missing (again) although Kreacher will be included.

this is edited, katherine u are completely right and i also wish they hadnt made the movies but if they stop the movies now then itll suck reading the books cuz u already have an image of what the characters look like and then u will always think of the movie the way it was so they kindoff have to make the movies

I love the books and honestly I think making the movies was a mistake. Part of the magic of the books is each reader imagining all the details in their own head. It always is a little disappointing to see someone else's vision of magical books.

I've read some interviews where the kids bascially admit they aren't all that interested in making any more HP movies so that would explain some of the acting.

man they left so much out of the 4th movie, I was highly dissapointed. I mean they left out Dobby....hes like a huge character, he tried to get hp not to go back to hogwarts and he warned him about stuff and everything...they made th emovies too short and left out key things, i wouldnt of minded sittin there another hour to see everything.
