Rule number 1 is to be yourself. Only you know what bothers you and what you can handle. You cannot change your personality so just learn to deal with things. People are going to talk about you, laugh at you, call you names, etc. This is called life and the real world. You have to watch out for yourself and yourself only. If you let what people say affect your actions you will get no where and waste your time wondering what if. Self confidence comes with maturity and loving yourself/who you are. Nobody can make you more self confident than yourself. You can hang out with the most popular people and still have no self confidence. So in conclusion, be yourself, love yourself, believe in yourself and you will overcome your troubles.

No one is really like that except for the people that no one wants to hang around. If people don';t care about what I think in the slightest then why would I want to hang around them? They don't care about me or anyone else. Now if you care about people then you will care what they think. So I guess if you want to be like that, just become stuck-up and leave all your current friends and family behind.
Now self confidence is actually just an illusion usually. Nobody I know is REALLY self confident, but most can hide it better than me. So learn to hide that fact that you care what people think of you and you are on you way!

fake it and act. decide how a self-confident person would act, and do so even if you do not feel confident. your new behavior will make you very uncomfortable at 1st, but eventually it will become a habit and feel natural. especially since, you will get reinforcement because you will see that when you act self confident the world will not end; in fact you will reap rewards.

Listen. Be interested in what other people have to say. Ask them questions. This will accomplish several things. You will learn from listening to other people and your opinions will be more informed. People will think you are fascinating because you are interested in what they have to say. Finally all the time you are thinking about somebody else you are not thinking about yourself. Thinking about yourself is what makes you self conscious and takes your attention away from more interesting things that you need to think about in order to be interesting.

Associate yourself with others who you would like to be like. For instance, others who are more positive, more confident. It will wear off on you.
But I don't think you can change your personality, it is part of who you are.
