Hm, I'd consider your musical tastes to be either alternative or rock. Or possibly alternative rock.

All kidding aside, your musical tastes seem heavily centered on British rock acts. The ones you list seem like more mellow rock, for the most part, with emotive vocals and instruments that transcend the usual guitar/bass/drums/singer arrangement.

You might like something like Porcupine Tree, whom I'd consider distant cousins of Coldplay, music-wise.

Spock's Beard is another band you might want to consider - they're American, but they tend to incorporate keyboards and piano into the mix, while retaining some pop music sensibility.

Also, I encourage you to pick up one of the more recent albums from The Gathering. They're a fairly mellow Dutch rock act with very emotive lyrics. The female vocalist [Anneke] will knock your socks off. She's probably one of the best vocalists in existence, hands down. They also have a fantastic keyboardist who likes to dabble a bit in electronica. (Songs will periodically break down into electronic soundscapes, and then the rock element will gradually reemerge.)

Finally, pick up a Green Carnation album! They're from Norway. Their earlier stuff may turn you off, based on the bands you listed. (The first few albums are heavy metal.) However, I bet you would like the Acoustic Verses - it's a very mellow album with intelligent lyrics and very elaborate instrumentation. They incorporate everything from a strings section to a theremin into the mix. The vocalist is absolutely fantastic.

Hey dude, it seems to me you dun really belong to any genre, thou if we leave The Beatles outta list, you're more likely to belong to the Contemporary Rock Genre, particularly Brit rock. However, I noticed you mentioned a liking for musical effect in all your favourite bands. A few bands whom I've listened and have musical effects are Radiohead, Starsailor, Maniac Street Preacher, Zebrahead, Dope, Marilyn Manson. I would recommend you try Radiohead and starsailorfirst as they are closer to the genre of the list of bands you gave. As for lyrics, both Bob Dylan and Neil Young are folk singers songwriters who are well known for their lyrics, so you might wanna try checking out their songs on their website first before you decided you like their lyrics or not.
