what is it called when a standared encryption that uses a browser to protect your information. all i know that is a "something" bit

You are probably thinking of SSL encryption. You can tell if a websites uses it from the padlock icon that displays, and the http:// will change to https://

Check out http://paypal.com for an example.

SSL generally uses 128 bit encryption. It is server side encryption, not a setting on your PC.

SSL is the protocol. The actual name that you are looking for is PKI (Public Key Infrastructure).
