Stocks, bonds, and other long-term holdings are either current or non-current assets (depending on the time frame cash becomes available), they are tangible assets not off-balance sheet intangibles. Off-balance sheet intangibles cannot really be measured or accounted for on the balance sheet. for ex. knowledge base, reputation, and human capital, these cannot be measured or accounted for on the balance sheet but may be an integral part of the business. And therefore, they are off-balance sheet intangibles. And they differ from intangibles that can be measured by useful lives such as patents, copyrights, and trademarks, which are amortized and shown on the balance sheet.
