The reason why I ask this is because I was with my boyfriend at his mom's video store. And this old lady was yelling at me because I was playing scratch and wins and she said it was illegal. I asked her, "Why? I'm 18." And she was like, "It's because you work here and it's against the law." So I told her that I was just there because of my boyfriend and that I do not work at the store. She just kept yelling at me and telling me that I should stand behind the counter if I wanted to do it. I got so pissed off because she embarrassed me in front of everyone in there and I hope she dies. Besides that, I would like an answer to my questions. Thank you.

If your employer permits it, and the law doesn't prohibit it, the old lady should be shown the door.

In my opinion it be like reading your email while your working. Unless it is business related it is probably not the right thing to do. I imagine that would be grounds to fire if you did kept doing it and your employeer asked you not to. As far as the lady - don't wish her dead. Remember what you wish and do onto others, usually comes back on you. Just forget her, some people are just rude.

Have a good day.

I am not aware of any of this type of law. I suppose it could be in your state--though I doubt it. It certainly might be grounds for your termination if your employer did not like it. In your case it clearly was not illegal. But again--it would be more than sufficient grounds for your bf's dismissal if the employers did not like having you behind the counter.
