The lightest and strongest to volume and expense, carbon fibers are inching in on the weight issue and chrome moli is preeety expensive, but it all boils down to what application you want.

I've read that they make alot of commercial aircraft using titanium, I would think that they would use the strongest metal for it's weight in order to save on fuel while maintaining the structural integrity of the aircraft. I also read that a thread of spider silk has 1000 times the tensile strength of steel, maybe someday they'll make airplanes out of spider silk! Not sure I'd want to ride in one though!
