I personally think the best hitter, based on fear, is Gary Sheffield. His bat speed is unmatched and he can crank any pitcher. The only reason that he wouldn't be the best hitter is because he has no technique really and just swings as hard as he can, it works great for him. The best technical hitter is Albert Pujols, he holds his bat at such an angle that he can bring his elbow to his belly button and have the bat through the zone at a very quick time. His success is based on his wide stance and weight transfer, he also has some of the best eyes that you'll ever see. He keeps his weight back and his head down and his swing is poetry in motion.

Pujols. If he keeps this up and can stay relatively injury free in 20 years we may be saying he was one of the top 3 hitters of all time.

you will hear people say Pujols, A-Rod, Jeter, Cano. They are all wrong. Although all the above have had success swinging the bat, each has a hole in their swing with has been exploited at one time or another. If you want to see pure hitting, look no further than any Japanese prospect to enter the league as of late. These guys are trained to hit for contact and bases rather than just juicing it for the fences every single at bat.

Albert Pujols. The guy hits for Average, HR and RBI.
Has the slugging and On Base.
No one else mentioned does all of the above, and does it year in year out.
Ryan Howard did this this year, hope he does it next year.

pujols is the best all around hitter and player in baseball. but i think people are quickly discovering the best contact hitter in baseball, not ichiro, but a 2nd baseman named placido polanco.

Joe Mauer ( MIN ) he hit .347 for the American league , and Freddy Sanchez ( PIT ) he hit .344 for the National. They are the best hitters.
