not at all, but linguistically queer means odd or strange, while gay originally meant happy. so some don't like being labeled strange. personally i dont care homo, 'mo , gay, queer, fag, homosexual it doesn't matter. you can call me anything as long as it's respectful, if it's not the person has a problem lolololol i'm 6 foot 220 pounds and i was raised on a farm in alabama so i'll kick their *** (if i have to) but i do try and remember that words only have power if we let them!

If you wish to call yourself/refer to yourself as that, then go right on ahead -- own it!
Just a word of caution, though, because in many places I've been, the word "queer" is used for and by people who don't "fit" into the labels of the LGBT community, it's like LGBT + Fetish + obscurity. Maybe where you're at, people will interpret it differently.
Why do you call yourself queer, I guess, would be a question I'd wish to ask you. Do you not "fit" into any of the other labels?
Best of luck to you!

Actually I like the word queer as a description who I am and where I fit in. I'm bisexual and a sexual Sadist(yes its ALWAYS consensual), and yes have been and known it all my life(which at this point is getting pretty long). I'm also alot of other things, like a good citizen, a good employee, a daughter, a mother, a grandmother, a lover, a Mistress, a friend and a neighbor. I'm complicated enough to be called queer. I think its a good descriptive name, if we have to have one.

It depends on what you mean by, and what you want to be understood by, the word 'queer'. Queer once meant just being a little different from the percieved norm. Now it is commonly understood as 'gay', another word whose meaning has seriously morphed over the last few decades. I would say, start with the definition you most wish to convey, and find a word that is most accurate in doing that.
btw, my sexual orientation is 'crooked'.

Back in the 30s, 40s, and 50s, the terms "queer", "f*g", and "f*gg*t" were all terms for homosexuals and were intended as derogatory, like calling a black man a "n*gg*r". "Gay" was adopted as an alternative by the Gay Rights Movement of the '60s because the other choice was "homosexual" which was still listed medically as a mental disorder. It's the same as people choosing Trans gender over Gender Disphoric, the Medical term for the same thing, but listed as a mental disorder. Nowadays, just as many Black people have taken to referring to themselves as "n*gg*r", many gays are adopting "queer", in the BDSM community many of them openly refer to themselves as "pervs" or "perverts". Using it oneself, as a simple expression of identity, goes a long way toward robbing the word of it's effectiveness as an insult. More power to ya!

Nothing wrong with it. Here's why:
Queer used to be a very very derogatory word for gay. If you are gay, and call yourself queer, you take the derogatory power away from the word. So people can't use it against you in hate. Which is good.
It's kind of like the n word, but to a lesser degree.

Queer seems to be a new word in our community, one embraced by this new generation. It seems to be a take-back of a negative word, like gay was in the 90's, so I think it's a great thing. Self-define as you will.

I prefer to refer to myself as gay but if you want to be queer, I have no problems with that.

Hey, dude, if you're fine with calling yourself, that's cool. If the rest of society's connotations with the word or it's meaning (whether referring to sexual orientation or not) is too much for them to handle, that's their problem.
Tell them you're gay, a homo, a fag, a queer.. whatever you want. It's all good.

all queer means is something that is strange or odd...unconventional, if you are different from others more power to you...nobody wants to be like everyone else...well only the cool people dont want to be like everyone else....people have taken that word and have applied it in homosexual terms because it is different but it has nothing to do in definition with being homosexual
