Should be pH (sorry for being pedantic) ... but you could suggest that an acid is corrosive & vinegary and an alkali is corrosive and soapy ... but then again, all those analogies to taste may be a bad idea.

You cannot adequately explain the difference between acids and bases without using chemistry concepts. The property of being an acid, or a base, is entirely chemical in nature, and has no real analogue in every day life.

Simple--Go thu a bunch of foods--when cooked without seasoning, acids are sour and bases are salty-bitter (but don't encourage tasting of non-foods). Acids and bases are two opposites, and when they are mixed together a neutral liquid and a salt. Examples of Acids are orange juice, vinegar, apples, and even sour cream. Examples of Bases are fresh milk or cream, broccoli, lettuce and baking soda.

you can explain like this
"Acid is something which starts a reaction" and "Base is something which neutralises it".
An example to this is "when you have gastric problems due ti over acid secretion on the stomach you take gelusil to neutralise it". Try explaining this to the child
