It depends on what kind of information you are needing..

Most public records are not online and you will have to go to local courthouses to get them. It's free there, but you pay for the trip and the time.. this is why so many services charge.

Housing information, leins, deeds, etc can can found online at each cities Secretary of State site.

http://switchboard.com has name and address information as well. Also, you can do reverse telephone number lookups, which can be handy.
