I think it appears that way because that's what is presented on TV and in movies. I think if you spend some time in a mall, you'll find that not that many common people care about their appearance. However if you are asking why westerners are more shallow than some cultures, I think its because our focus is on money and what money can buy. Right now the Baby Boomers (and I am one of them) are desperately trying to ward off the inevitable aging and death we all succumb to.
Folks, give it up. In ten years you will look like your parents. In ten more, you will look like your partner. In ten more, you'll look like your dog.

because western people are practical people...what they think would satisfy their ego they usually go for it, they think superior of themselves tall, good physique, colored eyes and hair so appearance is very important. unlike in our culture...asian culture...humility and intellect is very important to have wisdom to achieve good life. but in every culture appearance is a must.so its not only in the western culture

because we have been led to believe that it would make you happy ,in reality we have more people on drugs , from the street or your doctor, because we have lost sight of what a human being should be, the only true happiness is peace within your self, that does not come from buying a lot of useless junk

its selection the dna patterns folks find attractive arent differant from cave days they all relate to the hunter gatherers like a long legged big breastedwoman with a high butt is able to run faster from enemies and give suck to children isnt that Barbie, and a man muscular and tall and strong to throw spears and run after game isnt that Ken

I think it depends upon the individual. Personally, I value intelligence over looks. I've always said looks fade--intelligence and personality are forever.

i personally think it makes us feel more comfortable becuase emotions intimidate us and cause us to face reality.
