I was riding my Tallassee today, an American SadleBred, and we had a good ride for a little while trotted some galloped a little. She ate a little grass alongside of the road. But all of a sudden she lowered her head like she wanted grass, then went down. It was like her legs just folded under her. Then she stood up looked groggy, and wouldn't move for a long time. Just stood there , Like in a daze. Then after a while, she acted fine. I called the man who takes care of them for us and he came out, and she seemed fine. Has anything like this ever happened to any of you? Do you know what it could be? I love my Tallassee, I hurt just thinking of her being sick. Could it be she ate something wrong?

lyricsopr...: Sounds like you know my Tallassee, she has tried tripping on a leaf to go back home. But it didn't work, she forgot to continue limping so only limped for about 2 minutes, till she saw grass.

Sounds like she ate some jimson weed. Get a vet to check her out. It is not called loco weed for no reason and she may get that way again. It does the same thing to humans. So stay away from it.

Next time you are with the horse, watch her breathing. If it seems she seems a bit winded while riding or it seems she is pushing air from her stomach instead of her chest, she may have a touch of the heaves which is caused by moldy grain, hay, grass, etc. It is a form of horse emphysema and also takes horses down from lack of air and passing out or getting light headed. If you notice this, call the vet for she will needs meds for her breathing.

She should see a vet. If it happens again she really NEEDS to see a vet. It could be something toxic that she ate, a seizure, maybe even narcolepsy (where they have a sudden attack of sleep). Then again it oculd just be that she is smart and has found a way to get a break when she wants one. The vet check could help figure this out.

If you're worried, take it seriously and get a vet to check her. It could be nothing, but you obviously love your horse very much, and would rather be safe than sorry.

My own theory: My friend's POA has done that. We used to joke that her horse just decided that she had had enough of the ride. Then she rode my horse one day, and the same thing happened in the barn, before she even got on. I checked the girth and it was really tight. So I loosened it, and he was fine.

I don't know if this is what happened with your horse, but one day while riding my friends horse he decided to lay down, he stopped and down he went, it was a hot day and I think he just wanted a break. I jumped off grabbed the reins and made Bandit stand up, re-mounted and he layed down again!!!

I'm not sure if it has anything to do with the grass, I don't let horses eat while I'm riding, it makes them think they are in control. Which can be kinda scary with a 1500lb animal contorling a 150lb person.

I would really wonder about narcolepsy, by what you described. But as I have read, short of the horse doing it in front of the vet, it is really hard to diagnose.

she might've been too hot. you really shouldn't let her eat while you're riding. also, she might've needed some water. Or, you could've had the saddle strapped too tight. any number of things could've caused that.

I'M SURE SHE'S FINE. MAYBE SHE WAS DAYDREAMING OR JUST NEEDED TO STOP AND REST.
