I believe that the difference between a gynecological exam and a regular checkup is that with a regular check up your doctor will check everything (weight, any problems, etc.) but for a gynecological exam it's usually just your pelvic area that they deal with. You don't necessary have to go to a gynecologist for a pelvic exam but some doctors would prefer to send you to a gyno instead. Some will do it, some won't. Just ask your doctor if they will do a pelvic exam for you and they will usually say yes.

Most general practitioners (regular doctors) can do pelvic exams as part of their physical. Usually, it's only when there is a problem that women need to see a gynocologist. At least, that is how it is in my country (Canada). I don't know about America but, it's the same in Austrailia and the UK. If you need to get a pelvic exam, just call your regular doctors office and request one, if he/she does not do pelvics, ask for a referal to a doctor that will do one for you.

Most doctors can do a "pelvic" exam. You might want to consider a Nurse Practitioner (female) who is much more likely to be in tune with your needs and understanding of female issues.
