When George Steinbrenner came on the scene.....in the early 1970's
Also around the same time, player's unions became more powerful.
Not sure who the first million dollar contract belonged to, probably a baseball player.

I think Babe Ruth was the first athlete to make more than the president of the US. When asked about it he said, "Why shouldnt I make more than president Hoover? I had a better year!"

because TV is paing big bucks to show them and the team gets allot of that money and that is why they get allot of money
