I am not sure myself...but I have heard that you wait until the child doesn't like being in a dirty diaper.

If your son is showing you signs that he is ready, like, wanting to sit on the potty and letting you know when he has gone in his diaper, go for it! Start slow though. Read him books about the potty.
My son was 2 1/2 when we started a game. Take a few cheerios and put them in the potty and have him aim for them. This was a very easy way to start the transition b/c it makes it fun for them.
All children are different though. Some start early while others take more time. Just try not to get too frustrated with it. I promise you there will be a few accidents.

No harm in starting now! Start setting him on the potty (get a little one like a baby bjorn little potty, low to the ground and easy to clean, and contoured for a little heiney) when he first wakes up in the morning, after eating, and after naps. He may not do anything now, but it is important to at least get him used to the idea of potties.
I started potty training #1 around 18 or 20 months (fully PT at 24 months) and I started potty training #2 at 7 weeks (yes, weeks). She is now 4.5 months old and she eliminates on the potty several times a day and rarely poops in her diaper. Many cultures start potty training at birth, such as China for example. So it's never too early to start, but we live in a culture of diapers where it is considered strange to start potty training before age 2.

Sounds like this is a good time to start preparing your child for the potty time. When my children were about this age..I started telling them every time I changed a diaper..went to the potty myself..ect..that when the weather got warm we were gonna put on potty pants and use the potty instead of diapers..they heard this for several months and when the time came they were ready and we had a very easy time adjusting. I waited till warm weather so as not to have to deal with heavy clothes for training...

My pediatrician said that the best time is:
For girls between 2 and 3 but closer to 2.
For boys between 2 and 3 but closer to 3.
A friend of mine who works at a pediatricians office said when you know it's time to start to potty train your child is when you put a dry diaper on them before bedtime and if they wake up with a dry diaper they are ready. They have control over there bladder.
Another way to know when your child is ready is when they tell you pee-pee or poo-poo. When they recognize when they need to go or even when they are going.
Your son at 16 months isn't ready to potty train yet.
I have an 18 month old son. Just to get him use to the potty so he won't be afraid when it is time to start the process, I sit him on the potty before bath time and after bath time.
Recently I sat him on the potty and he went a little bit, I thought, OK that is good and we clapped our hands and made a big deal out of it. I took him off the potty and he was standing there naked, I hadn't put his pj's on yet. He went all kinds on the bathroom rug.
He just isn't ready yet.
Just be patient.

I usually start introducing them to the toilet around a year old. Just put them on Potty or toilet for a minuet even if they don't do anything clapp and show them how to flush. Then just take it slow if they like keep going if not try again in a week or two. Usually around 2-2 and half is when they finally get it.
